Making the decision to home schooling is usually very difficult and not one to be taken lightly. It is a personal decision that no one can make for you, but maybe I can help you think it through. Consider these things in making your decision.

A Few Reasons To Consider Home Schooling

There are a lot of reasons why you should consider home schooling your children. These reasons are as varied as the parents and families who are home schooling.

There are some parents that do not want their children to attend a public school. This could be because the school system is bad or actually harming their children. On the other hand, there are parents who are home schooling their children for religious reasons. Regardless of any of these things, home schooling parents believe that they have made the best educational choice for their children.

Whenever it comes to your child's growth and academic development there can be little doubt that home schooling usually produces superior results in comparison to the results of a traditional school setting. This can be seen in such things as home school children winning the National Spelling Bee, as well as the number of home school children who have gone on to attain degrees at some of our finest universities, often at a very young age.

Of course, you are going to find those people who claim that these children are simply gifted and thus they are not succeeding simply because they have been home schooled. However, if this were indeed true, then we have a lot of geniuses in our younger generation. Simply stated, numbers do not support this viewpoint. These are not statistics that have been produced by advocates of home schooling either. These are numbers that the U.S. Department of Education has gathered together. In this research you will notice that home-schooled children do much better than those children who attend public schools. The numbers also show that children taught at home are at least an entire grade level ahead by the time they turn twelve-years-old, and as much as four grades ahead by the time that they should be in eighth grade.

Just as much as home schooling offers a child a lot of things, it also takes some things away from the child as well. For instance, there is a lot of peer pressure and bullying taking place within the public school system today. This can sometimes place our children in danger. If you choose to home school your children, then you will have a lot more control over what your children do and who they socialize with.

While home schooling is not an easy option, it undoubtedly works for both the children and the parents who put for the effort that it requires.

Other Home Schooling Considerations

Home schooling tends to take up a lot of time in your day. As a home schooling parent you will have very little personal time or time alone. If forethought is not taken to set aside time for yourself, it is easy to never have time alone.

Home schooling is more than just sitting down with books for a couple of hours everyday. A willing student is always helpful. Ultimately, the decision is the parents to make, but if your child is dead against it, you might have a hard time of it. There are lessons to prepare, experiments and projects to be done, field trips, papers to grade, park days, music lessons, and the list goes on.

Housework and laundry have to be done, but it probably won't get done first thing in the morning. If a stickler for a spotless house, you might be in for a surprise. Not only does housework need to be let go at times, but home schooling creates messes and clutter in itself.

If you can read and write, you should be able to teach your children. The curriculum and teacher materials will help through the planning and teaching. Get help from others if you get stuck or hire tutors for the difficult subjects.

It is imperative that both parents agree to try home schooling. If your spouse is against it at this time, try doing more research and talking to more people. It is very difficult to home school if one parent is against it.
